Dwight Gooden (also known as "Doc," short for "Doctor K") was well on his way to a Hall of Fame career in his early 20s before he derailed himself with cocaine and alcohol abuse. Those demons may have once again reared their ugly heads for Gooden. According to the New York Daily News, Gooden was arrested during rush hour Tuesday morning and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, in relation to a two-car crash that reportedly occurred at 8:50 a.m. He was also charged with leaving the scene and reckless driving.
It gets worse, though. Gooden had his five-year-old son, Dylan, in the car with him. So you can tack on charges of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and endangering the welfare of a child.
Gooden, 45, is no stranger to problems with drugs and alcohol. He's been through five rehab stints and served jail time in connection with his cocaine problem back in 1996.
Recently, though, Gooden had remained out of trouble for a good amount of time and was said to have been sober for about 3 1/2 years, leading up to taking over a minor league baseball team as the senior vice president.
Gooden ended his major league playing days with a pretty good overall career (194 wins, 3.51 ERA and over 2,000 strikeouts), but many baseball personnel, fans and probably Gooden himself are still left wondering what could have been. While most pitchers don't even make the majors by age 22, Gooden had already gone 58-19 with a 2.28 ERA and 744 strikeouts. He also won a Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young award and a World Series ring -- again, before he even turned 22. He made four All-Star games before he turned 24, but never accomplished that feat again.
We don't know all the details on the case just yet, so let's not fully jump to conclusions, but, for now, there's certainly reason to concern for the well-being of Gooden's son and Gooden himself.
