The Toronto Rock (5-1) rallied past their division rival, the Buffalo Bandits (1-5), on the new turf at HSBC Arena Saturday night. The Rock led the scoring 8-6 at half and went on to finish their two-game weekend with a 14-10 victory in front of 14,467 fans.
Toronto Rock captain Colin Doyle reached 1,000 regular season career points with an assist on a powerplay goal at 0:29 into the 2nd quarter of the game. Doyle became only the third player in league history to reach the 1,000 point milestone, joining elite NLL veterans John Tavares of the Buffalo Bandits (1,420 Points) and Gary Gait of the Rochester Knighthawks (1,139 Points). Doyle recorded one goal and four assists in the win in Buffalo.
Offensively, it was a big night for rookie forwards from both the Rock and the Bandits, but it was the Rock offense that prevailed and capitalized on their hard-working execution.
Toronto Rock forward Stephen Leblanc opened the scoring with a one-timer on Bandits goaltender Ken Montour at 4:37 in the first quarter. Leblanc has been the first to score in the last two Rock games and went on to score two goals and three assists for a total of five points. Leblanc has a total of 36 points so far this season.
It was also a big night Rock rookie forward Garrett Billings, who recoded one goal and an impressive eight assists. For the season, Billing now has a total of 38 points in six games.
On the Bandits side, rookie forward Kyle Clancy was put to work and made some great plays, scoring two goals and five assists in the loss against the Rock in only his second game with the Bandits. Clancy, who was selected 10th overall by the Bandits in the 2010 Entry Draft, has a total of seven points in his debut season.
The Rock, who carried the speed of the game, out-shot the Bandits 36-23 in the first half and went on to dominate in the Bandits end, with 57 shots versus the Bandits' 41.
Veteran goaltender Steve Dietrich started in net for the Rock and remained between the pipes for the entirety of the game. Dietrich made 31 saves in his first start of the season and held Buffalo scoreless in the fourth quarter.
The Buffalo Bandits visit the Philadelphia Wings (1-4) next Saturday from the Wachovia Center at 8:00pm ET.
The Toronto Rock look to capitalize on their current momentum with another home-and-away weekend. The Rock play home to the Edmonton Rush at 7:30pm ET from the Air Canada Centre before traveling to Calgary to take on the Roughnecks on Sunday at 6:30pm ET.
